Monaco. Azure Coast. Travel to Monaco What to see in monaco in 1 day

Leaving St. Petersburg and going on his first bus trip around the cities Europe, I did not yet know what a huge mass of impressions I would bring with me to my homeland. The route sign looked extremely tempting: Italy - France. The list of cities and countries that I was to visit included an exotic principality Monaco located on the azure coast of France. My long-standing desire to visit this dwarf state was kindled with renewed vigor and, being unable to overcome the temptation, I decided on a difficult journey.

Difficult, but interesting. Still, not everyone can see many of the outstanding museum cities of Europe in just 18 days, and at the same time relax on the wonderful sandy beaches of Monaco, Cannes and Nice, and not immediately. Thus, sacrificing my comfort as a tribute to the debt of my curiosity and irrepressible thirst for travel, having overcome several hundred kilometers of the railway track from St. Petersburg to Kaliningrad, I sat down in an Estonian bus and set off to conquer Europe.

Without going into details, I will say that by the 12th day of our trip, the bus reached the shores of Monaco, and I could finally realize my childhood dream and walk along the picturesque streets of an exotic state. Since in the western part of the European continent, most countries participate in the so-called "Schengen agreement", entry into their territory is visa-free (there is one Schengen visa for all countries), and you can move around them freely without wasting time at customs stops. Thus, in about an hour and a half, the bus took us from glamorous and respectable French Cannes to sunny and graceful Monaco, towering on one of the mountain ranges framing the Mediterranean coast. Despite the fact that the principality is surrounded on all sides by French lands, it is considered a sovereign independent state, with its own flag and anthem.

The local Monaco football club, traditionally considered the pride of the kingdom, plays in the French championship only for the reason that in the country, with about 40,000 people, there are very few professional football players and only enough for one full-fledged team. However, Monaco has been involved in sports for a long time. Already since 1929, Formula 1 car races have been regularly held here, and the Louis II Stadium annually hosts matches for the European Football Super Cup.

Monaco is divided into several districts, where each has its own purpose. So the main resort areas here are Monte Carlo and Larvotto, and the picturesque seaport with snow-white yachts is located in the La Condamine area. Most of the population are French and Monegasques (as the indigenous people are called here). In addition, a significant number of Italians live in the country. The main religion is Catholicism. A feature of the principality is the high social level of the people living here. It is dominated by a contingent of highly educated and financially wealthy citizens. Monaco is considered one of the most respected and wealthy countries in the world. There is almost no unemployment in the state, and the income of individuals is not taxed. By the way, largely for this reason, the overwhelming majority of the working population of the principality are foreigners. The only way to become a citizen (or citizen) of Monaco (read Monegasque) is to marry or marry a local resident.

The main attraction of Monaco is the Monte Carlo Casino. It is painted in originality, bright light green color and can be seen from almost any point. Every year, millions of rich people from around the world come here to spend their extra money. The casino is very popular in Europe and is intended for the elite. You can enter it only in a suit and having a certain amount of money on hand. Due to the fact that we Russians do not have such complexes, I went there in beach slippers and a T-shirt, having 2 euros with me (I didn’t take any more, it was a pity). Unfortunately, right at the entrance, I was slowed down by local guards in beautiful blue tunics with red cuffs. Despite the fact that I tried in every possible way to demonstrate to them the dignity of my figure, they did not succumb to persuasion. Apparently the Monegasque guards are still the right orientation, which made me very happy.

The Principality of Monaco can be explored in its entirety in just one hour. I don’t know how these 40 thousand people, according to statistics, living in this unique state, fit on its territory, but I got the feeling that they are all on business trips or on the beach. The streets, reminiscent of the scenery of a doll's courtyard, were empty except for tourists constantly looking around and clicking the camera button. From almost anywhere, there are breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding area. Green palm trees, sea blue and brilliant yellow sand with a snow-white tint make you admire all this beauty against your will.

The climate in Monaco matches the standard of living. It is dry and warm in summer (average air temperature is about +30 degrees), and in winter it sometimes rains, but the weather is still warm (in January it rarely falls below +12). Swimming here begins in April, and ends only in November. The beaches are superbly equipped, and numerous snow-white yachts, ready to break anchor at any moment, stand in the port of La Condamine, like cars in a traffic jam, on Nevsky Prospekt, in St. Petersburg. By the way, photographs of the port are present in large numbers on numerous brochures and brochures dedicated to Monaco.

Traveling by bus across Europe impressed me so much that later I repeated such tours more than once, and Monaco, with its unique charm and graceful grandeur, remained in my memory forever.

Monaco-Ville (La Rocher)

The Principality of Monaco, with its tiny territory of only 202 hectares, has become world famous as a tourist center and vacation spot for the richest people on the planet. This dwarf Mediterranean state, located on the Cote d'Azur, is associated with France and has a land border with it. The climate is comfortable with moderately warm winters. Thanks to the Alpes-Maritimes, cold northern winds do not come here at this time of the year. On the Cote d'Azur, covered with sea breezes, the summer is not too hot, which is very favorable for a beach holiday.

Casino Monte Carlo in Monaco

In Monaco, according to 2017 data, 38,695 people live; of these, about a fifth are Monegasques (indigenous people) who do not pay taxes. The princely dynasty of Grimaldi, which created many architectural monuments on this small piece of land over the seven and a half centuries of its reign: magnificent buildings, interesting museums, unique temples, takes care of the country's prosperity. Tourists from all over the world are attracted to Monaco by numerous festive events and festivals, luxurious entertainment centers and the opportunity to join the life of the wealthiest people. And fans of Formula 1 can drive in a rented car through the streets where the track of world-famous races passes.

The whole Principality consists of four parts: the unique Old Town, the famous Monte Carlo, the industrial area and the business center. Attractions that deserve attention are located at some distance from each other - by local standards, even far. To get a holistic impression of the country, you should get acquainted with its ancient history and modern life.

Monaco-Ville

Monaco-Ville

It is impossible to visit Monaco and not visit the Old Town towering over the entire principality with ancient narrow streets, houses built in 1215 and terraced gardens laid back in the 13th-16th centuries. The second name of this historical center, where the medieval spirit is carefully preserved, is Monaco-Ville (among the local population it is known as La Rocher). The length of the entire territory on the rock of Saint-Antoine is no more than 700 m, and the width is 300 m, but it is here that you can see many sights in one place. Among the inhabitants - and there are less than 1,000 of them - there are no foreigners, since no one, except Monegasques, has the right to buy real estate in this city.

Casino Monte Carlo

Casino Monte Carlo

The hallmark of Monaco was the casino, opened in Monte Carlo by a French financier at the behest of Prince Charles III. This is one of the most famous gambling establishments in the world, which has made the Principality an aristocratic place for leisure activities. In its building, the museum is open all the first half of the day (entrance to it by tickets without any observance of the dress code). The casino opens in the afternoon, but only guests of the country are allowed there: the local population is strictly forbidden to play.

Monte Carlo Opera House

Monte Carlo Opera House

At the end of the 19th century, there was no cultural life in Monaco, so when designing the casino, a concert hall was added to it, named after its creator, the architect Charles Garnier. Opened in 1879, the theater, whose hall can accommodate 524 spectators, was built in eight and a half months. The exterior and interior design of the building was influenced by Parisian artists.

Larvotto beach

Larvotto beach

Larvotto Beach, with its snow-white artificial sand, is a real "showcase" of glamorous relaxation for those who can afford not to count the money. Even topless sunbathing is customary there in jewelry, and the prices for beach accessories and drinks are beyond the reach of an ordinary tourist. However, if you want to join the beautiful life, you can visit the restaurants on the coast and experience a truly excellent quality of service in such places. A special attraction is given to this beach by a net stretched along the entire coast and protecting bathers from the invasion of jellyfish.

What to see in Monaco in 1 day

If 1 day is allotted for a tour of the principality, it is worth planning in advance what to see in Monaco in such a short time. To complete the experience, the easiest way is to go to the Old Town, where there are many interesting places nearby: for example, taking the lift to the rock of Saint-Antoine, you can walk along the medieval street of Monaco-Ville, visit the Prince's Palace, go to the Cathedral of St. Nicholas and attend a theatrical performance at Fort Antoine.

Prince's Palace

Prince's Palace

Monaco has been ruled by the Genoese Grimaldi dynasty since the 13th century. She owns the Main Palace of the Principality, located in the most impregnable place: on the high rock of Saint-Antoine, washed by the sea and protected by mountains. The architecture of the residence of the rulers, who expanded and strengthened it in order to protect it from capture by the conquerors, is unique. The appearance of this main attraction of the country, which keeps the secrets of past centuries, reflects each era of the existence of the state: inside you can see the Italian gallery, the hall with the throne, admire the salon of Louis XV, listen to a concert in the courtyard, but the southwestern wing with the Grimaldi chambers is closed for tourists .

Cathedral of Saint Nicholas

Cathedral of Saint Nicholas

In honor of St. Nicholas in Monaco-Ville, the Cathedral was erected in 1875, which is interesting for visitors with the tomb of the princely family. The temple was built of white stone in the Neo-Romanesque style and finished inside with Carrara marble. The interior decoration is well thought out: icons, altar paintings by famous artists, church utensils trimmed with gold and precious stones. Every year on National Day, which is celebrated on November 19, a majestic service is held in the cathedral with solemn organ music and the observance of ancient traditions of the 13th century.

Fort Antoine

Fort Antoine

For tourists interested in the history of the state, of particular interest are the fortifications preserved in Monaco-Ville, part of which is Fort Antoine. It was built in the 18th century, and destroyed in 1944, but after the Second World War it was restored in its original form. Visitors often take pictures near the ancient cannons, the corner tower and the pyramid of cannonballs. Now there is a theater in the fort, on the stage of which you can watch performances and other spectacular performances for free.

Oceanographic Museum

Oceanographic Museum

Created by Prince Albert I, the oceanographic museum rises on the rock of Saint-Antoine and resembles a ship rushing across the sea. In its building there are two research organizations at once: an institute engaged in the study of the oceans, and a museum whose expositions are dedicated to the marine theme. This place attracts tourists with a huge aquarium, where exotic fish are delivered from all over the world.

Monaco beautiful places

In Monaco, tourists are surrounded by wonderful nature everywhere. From the cliff of Saint-Antoine you can admire the amazing sea views, and while hiking - the magnificent architecture of the buildings. Every corner of this small principality is amazingly skillfully decorated, which can become an example for other states of prudence and careful attitude to their resources.

Botanical Garden of Monaco

Botanical Garden of Monaco

Many species of plants, in the tissues of which water accumulates, are collected in the botanical garden. These are all kinds of cacti and succulents brought to Monaco from different countries and have taken root in the Mediterranean climate. The garden with an area of 1 g is located on the rock of Saint-Antoine, from where a beautiful view of the sea, the whole principality and the parking of snow-white yachts opens.

Japanese garden

Japanese garden in Monaco

The true miracle of Monaco is the Japanese garden, located on an area of 0.7 hectares. It is located near Larvotto Beach on Princess Grace Avenue. In 17 months of painstaking work, a team of landscape designers led by Yasuo Beppu created a stylized mountain, hill, waterfall, beach, stream and Zen meditation garden at the site. Plants are selected and arranged according to the principle of five cardinal points and four seasons, symbolizing the cyclical nature of human life. The Japanese Garden is open daily from 9 am to sunset, and tours are usually planned so that tourists must go there.

Princess Grace Rosary

Princess Grace Rosary

Named after Grace Kelly, a magnificent rose garden is located in Fontvieille. The princess, remembered by the inhabitants of Monaco for her special love for flowers, was presented on her wedding day with Rainier III with an unusually fragrant nominal rose, which was specially brought out by the Meillan flower house. In 1984, an exhibition of 14,000 roses planted on an area of 3,300 m² was opened in honor of Princess Grace. And now new varieties are planted in the rose garden, which are given the names of members of the princely house.

Park near the Casino

Park near the Casino

There is also a beautiful park in Monte Carlo. It is located near the Casino, on the most horizontal section of the city. However, the area, which is planted mainly with palm trees, has a strong slope. The park pleases tourists with a whole cascade of clean and well-groomed fountains.

What to see in Monaco and surroundings

Monaco has many museums. They are visited with pleasure by lovers of history, ethnography, art and ancient technology. Admirers of traditions should look into the church of St. Devota. Those who rave about the sea can spend hours admiring luxury yachts in the port of Hercule and imagine themselves as conquerors of the oceans.

Museum of Old Monaco

Museum of Old Monaco

It is best to get acquainted with the history of the principality in the Museum of Old Monaco. Its expositions of ancient clothes and folios, collections of coins and ceramics, musical instruments, paintings and photographs from different years will tell in detail about the life and traditions of the Monegasques. The halls, furnished with the furniture of the past centuries, and national costumes create an atmosphere of the distant past. The museum is located in the Old Town, it works during the months of the influx of tourists (June - September), the days of free admission are Wednesday and Friday.

Vintage Car Museum

Vintage Car Museum

The creator of the museum of vintage cars was Prince Renault III, who collected them for 30 years. Now this collection is housed in the Commercial Center (Fontvieille district). Its oldest exhibit is De Dion Bouton, issued in 1903. For visitors, the first cars of such well-known concerns as Lincoln, Peugeot, Citroen, Packard, and the carriages of the princely family presented here are of particular interest, and fans of Princess Grace can see the taxi that drove her around London.

Port Hercule

Port Hercule

Tiny Monaco has two seaports. Especially famous is the main one, called Hercule. It is there that millionaires put their luxurious white yachts, the number of which now reaches 700. Port Hercule (or Port Hercules) is located in a bay, above which two rocks rise: Saint-Antoine and Monte Carlo.

Church of Saint Devota

Church of Saint Devota

The guardian of the princely family, Saint Devota, protects the whole of Monaco. In the name of this Christian martyr, in the 11th century, a chapel was built in the monastery of Saint-Pons, and then a church was erected on this site in the Gomat valley, which became sacred to all Monegasques. About a hundred years ago, a tradition appeared every year to celebrate the feast of St. Devota on January 26, symbolically burning the fishing boat, in which, according to legend, the body of the murdered girl was carried. Brides now have a custom to bring their bouquets to the grave of the saint after the wedding.

When I think of Monaco, the first thing that comes to my mind is not yachts at sea or luxury cars on the city streets. No... The first thing that pops up before my eyes is the high-rise buildings, which huddled together so closely that it seemed that every square centimeter of the area was built up in the country. After Nice, where we rented accommodation for the duration of the trip, this was somehow very striking. You walk, and on the steep slopes around you rises a whole forest of skyscrapers. Well... Look...

I think even from these shots you can understand what I'm talking about.

However, in terms of travel, the dwarf size of the state is more of a plus than a minus. Even having only 3-4 hours at your disposal, you can see all the most interesting here without any problems. You arrive at Place D "Armes, and then calmly walk towards Monte Carlo, one by one "stringing" local attractions on your route.

I have already written in detail about how to get from Nice to Monaco in the article below. Therefore, no more words about the transport and geography of the principality. Today I will tell you about why it is worth going on such a journey. What to see in Monaco? And what places to add to your personal check-list? Ready for a little walk? Then let's start!

Prince's Palace in Monaco and the observation deck next to it

As I already said, we started our walk around the principality from the Place D "Armes", from which it was about 500 meters to the residence of the rulers of Monaco. As you start to climb the hill, you will immediately see several viewing platforms from which you can see , probably the most famous view of the city. There are always a lot of tourists on the top of the hill. Therefore (as for me) it’s better to start taking pictures already on the way (before reaching the top of the hill). The view there is plus or minus the same. But there are significantly more people less.

In general, the hill and the square near the Prince's Palace is probably one of the busiest points on the map of Monaco. There are people from all sides, souvenir shops, restaurants and other attributes typical of popular tourist locations. However, I personally remember this place not by the surrounding bustle, but by some amazingly lazy guard at the entrance to the prince's residence.

You know ... Usually in such places, soldiers are on parade. They mint a step, hold their back and all that ... And these somehow didn’t tense up at all. They came, they changed, they left… If one of the princely guards took out a cigarette and lit it, at that moment I wouldn’t be surprised at all. I even remembered sadly. Here it is clear why they are drawn on all magnets. And then ... Sun, sea and dinner on schedule. What is the step stamp?

Old Town and Cathedral of Saint Nicholas

About 500 meters from the prince's palace is another important sight of the city - the Catholic Cathedral of St. Nicholas (erected from white stone in 1875).

While walking towards it, take a look at the local historical center. Outwardly, it quite strongly resembles Italian cities (for example, the same one in which I was at the beginning of the year). The only difference is the slight chaos around. It seems that all the tourist attributes were simply thrown into a blender and mixed into some kind of atomic shake. Imagine narrow streets where people walk and there are some tables... You go around the corner - and here is parking for official cars. Or, for example, several souvenir shops huddled together.

Here in this place, I somehow especially clearly felt that I was in a dwarf state. On the one hand, I cannot say that all this was somehow exaggerated. No... But due to the lack of free space, everything that happens around takes on a slight note of madness. You walk down the street - and it seems like there is no one. And then another tourist group appears around the corner - and the street is no longer crowded.

St. Martin's Gardens, Sea Views and the Museum of Oceanography

The atmosphere of bustle began to gradually melt away only at the moment when we ended up in the Gardens of St. Martin. They are located directly opposite the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, so you are unlikely to miss them. By the way, there are free toilets and fountains with drinking water. And the gardens themselves made a good impression on me. They are quite small. But very well-groomed and go directly to the sea. And there ... Just crazy beauty. Cliffs, sea surface and snow-white yachts. Just for the sake of such views, it is already worth going to Monaco.

By the way, it is in the gardens of St. Martin that there is an observation deck where you can take a photo against the background of three countries at once - Monaco, France and Italy. This is the view (well…if the guide I overheard was telling the truth, of course). Finding this place is easy.

The huge building in front is, by the way, the local museum of oceanography. On the scale of Monaco, this is one of the TOP attractions. They say it's very cool inside. But to be honest, I haven't tested it myself. You can buy tickets in advance using this link. Seriously... The queues there are very long. Sometimes it is simply impossible to buy tickets today for tomorrow even via the Internet. Therefore, if you are going to visit the Oceanographic Museum, buy tickets at least 2-3 days before the trip. I think for families with children it will be space in general. There are colorful fish, turtles, and huge ship installations ... If we stayed in Monaco for at least 2-3 days, I myself would visit this place with pleasure.

Elevators, transitions and luxury cars

Remember, back at the beginning of the article, I wrote that Monaco stands on some kind of hills or even rather cliffs? So, so that people do not have to constantly step up and down the slopes, a wide variety of elevators, escalators and passages were built in the principality. As an example, I will show the elevator that is located next to the Museum of Oceanography.

You go down - and there is not a transition, but just some kind of art space. There are light projections on the walls. A little further - a long corridor with photographs of rare species of animals.

By the way, if you go to the very end, you can get to a small platform with a beautiful view of the sea.

Yes, I know… Sea views were pretty good before. But from here, the facade of the very Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, which I showed you a little earlier, is best seen. If you look at it from the side of Martin's gardens, it will constantly be at an angle to you. And here - it almost hangs over your head. Very impressive view.

Having made beautiful photos, we made a circle and again walked towards the city center. We passed some strange concrete beach, similar to steps descending to the sea ...

We admired the views of the local bus parking, when looking at which I again thought how little free space there is in this dwarf country.

And we went to the road, next to which there was such a metal car, as a reminder that somewhere here the legendary Formula 1 Grand Prix of Monaco regularly takes place.

Of course, we did not get to the races themselves. But cool cars that day I saw some kind of infinite set. There were Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini and Maserati. You look, some ordinary pensioner is standing in the shade and chatting on the phone. And then he puts the phone in his pocket, takes out the keys and leaves home in this car.

At that moment, I began to understand what they mean when they talk about a dignified old age.

Marina, Opera and Casino of Monte-Carlo

Okay… It's time for the vanilla vanilla drizzle. Like it or not, but Monaco, of course, is a very beautiful and impressive country. Here, literally every square centimeter of the area is saturated with luxury and some flashy beauty. You walk, and around you are beautiful people, beautiful houses, beautiful cars ...

Opera Monaco

After about an hour or an hour and a half spent here, I no longer wondered at the yachts that swayed measuredly on the water surface. And at that moment, somewhere ahead, a sparkling helicopter landed on a special platform above the sea. And looking at this picture, I realized that I still know how to be surprised.

This feeling of amazement hit me the most near the Monte Carlo casino. Here I really felt like one of the characters in the James Bond films.

As far as I remember, it was in this place that some scenes of the painting "Casino Royale" were filmed. Although this, of course, is far from the only item in the filmography of the principality.

Seriously... Just think: in this tiny state, such movie hits as "Iron Man-2", "12 Ocean's Friends", "Fatal Beauty" with Audrey Tautou and "Princess of Monaco" with Nicole Kidman were filmed. That is why, when you first find yourself in this dwarf principality, you can not leave the feeling that once you have already seen all this. As if you were already here ... It's hard to put into words. I heard that New York evokes similar feelings, where even huge guides are compiled on the filming locations of famous blockbusters and cult series.

A little more about Monte Carlo Casino

Okay ... Now specifically about that same legendary casino.

First: taking a picture with him is unrealistic. People constantly climb into the frame, and cars that park right there constantly strive to knock you down.

Second: the casino is divided into several zones. There is a gaming zone, the entrance to which, as I understand it, is paid (most likely - you need to buy chips for a certain amount). And a common hall for mere mortals.

It is set up like a playing field. You can take pictures with huge chips, wander around a couple of very beautiful and artsy rooms, and visit the free toilet (because the free toilet is a traveler's friend).

As for the minuses, here again it is worth saying a few words about the abundance of tourists. If you want a photo where you will stand thoughtfully in the center of the frame, and there will be no one behind you, master the art of Photoshop. Otherwise, doing something like this is unrealistic.

In a separate line, I will also note the fact that the casino is very seriously guarded. This is neither good nor bad. I'm just stating a fact. At the entrance are pumped-up guys with metal detectors. And inside in the common room there are several more guards on duty. We had a backpack with us, and in order to take photos, I put it for a while next to one of the columns in the common room. About a minute later, guards ran up to him, thinking that there might be explosives.

Japanese garden, beach and road back

If you go down a little from the Monte Carlo casino, right in front of you will be a small but very pretty garden, designed in oriental style. I didn’t see anything special in it (especially considering that some kind of construction was going on right next to it), but it’s not long to walk to it. Suddenly you like it?

Actually, at this place the program of walking around Monaco can already be completed. We went to the Cote d'Azur in the summer when it was swelteringly hot (don't repeat our mistakes!!!), so at the end of our trip we decided to test the local beach.

We swam, ate peaches, lay on the sand (or rather, very small pebbles), and then went back to look for the stop of the same bus number 100, which was supposed to take us back to Nice. Before the trip to Monaco, Tanya read somewhere that next to our beach there should have been the stop we needed. But in fact, in this part of the program there was a local failure, as a result of which we wandered a little more along the streets of the “administrative territory of Monte Carlo”.

To be honest, I wasn't particularly upset about it. We stumbled upon some small church…

We made some beautiful shots on the local streets…

And in the end, the same bus number 100 was "caught" right behind the Monte Carlo casino. The return trip took only an hour. I slept, drooling, and Tanya (as the hope of all mankind) made sure that we did not pass the right stop. This was our last day in Nice. Already for tomorrow we had planned a move to Cannes (which quite unexpectedly ended with a trip to the ballet). But this is a completely different story, which I will tell you about in my next articles. In general... Don't change channels!

How to organize a trip to Monaco?

Directions . We traveled from Nice to Monaco on bus number 100, which leaves from a stop called Le Port. The fare was 1.5 euros. Travel time is about an hour. I wrote more about how to get from one city to another in a separate post. Read it for sure. I shared the link at the very beginning of this story.

Navigation . In order to easily find all those attractions that I talked about here today, I recommend that you download the MAPS.ME application. This is a free offline navigator that I personally use on all my travels. Download the map of Monaco, fill in the desired point (be it a casino, a cathedral or a princely palace) - and just follow the arrows. Everything is very convenient.

Housing . The range of prices on the Côte d'Azur is very large, so I advise you to choose your accommodation option very carefully. Here's a simple example for you: we personally rented apartments in Nice and Cannes for 50 euros per day, while several of my Instagram followers wrote at once that they had to pay twice as much for absolutely average housing. So… How to avoid overpayments? Firstly, look for hotels not on Booking, but on this site. It compares all the offers on different booking sites and shows you which of them has the lowest price for a particular room.

I also recommend that you consider apartments from the AIRBNB website as an alternative to hotels. Personally, I like apartments more than hotel rooms. And yes, they are often cheaper. In addition, I also note that all new users can get an excellent discount from the AIRBNB website in just a few clicks. All you need is to register here at this link. After that, you will immediately receive a bonus of 37 euros for booking accommodation around the world.

Monaco is a tiny state in which people are used to living luxuriously. Only wealthy tourists go there, because even a cup of coffee there costs 50 US dollars. The sights of Monaco are scattered throughout the country, each deserves attention. It is important to know that significant cultural monuments are located quite far from each other. Knowing in advance what to see in Monaco will make it easier for you to organize your trip.

What to see in Monaco first of all?

First of all, I would like to present you with a rating of the sights of Monaco that you need to see first of all. A trip to this country cannot but be remembered, because it is literally overflowing with historical and cultural monuments.

1. Museum of Old Monaco

Central entrance to the Museum of Old Monaco

As the name implies, this is a place where entire collections of antique items, ceramics, and paintings are presented to the attention of tourists and local residents. The furnishings are made from preserved furniture of past centuries. Tourists are also interested in national costumes, because they seem to carry them back to the old days. The museum is free to visit and is open on certain days of the week from June to September. By visiting it, you can get an idea of who the Monegasques are.

2. Botanical Garden of Monaco

Flora of the Botanical Garden of Monaco

It has several names, but one thing is for sure, that this attraction should be one of the first to see. There are unique collections of cacti, succulents, and what is the view from above, which opens from the hill! The whole principality will be at your fingertips. In describing the garden, I would like to note that it specializes mainly in plants with special tissues where water is stored. They came from different parts of the world. The area of the garden reaches 1 hectare, it grows specimens that managed to take root in the local climate.

3. Larvotto Beach

White artificial sand on Larvotto beach

This Monaco attraction is a must for those who want a glamorous beach holiday, because the beach is one of the most expensive in the world. You can sunbathe topless on it, but keep in mind that the absence of jewelry on the body can be regarded as bad form. As for the prices for drinks, beach equipment, they are just off scale, but the service of the staff in restaurants and on the sea coast is worth it. Especially mothers with children like the jellyfish net, which stretches along the entire coast.

4. Monaco Ville

Panorama Monaco Ville

For those who are not in the know, the described state does not have a capital, it has only districts, one of which is Monaco-Ville. It is riddled with picturesque footpaths that lead to the Palace Square, where the official residence of the princely family is located. Many tourists tend to get here to see how the guard, consisting of 12 perfectly matched soldiers, changes. The area is located on a rock 60 m high above the water level, it is within easy reach of the sea.

5. Japanese garden

Corner of the Japanese Garden

This attraction of Monaco is considered a real miracle, and it is located on Princess Grace Avenue, as close as possible to the beach. Looking at the photo of the garden, you understand that it is deservedly one of the best in the world. It is known that its creation was commissioned by the architect and landscape painter Yassy Beppyu. For 17 months, a whole team of designers painstakingly worked on solving complex technical problems, and it was worth it. The result was a real masterpiece, which to this day belongs to the best sights not only of the country, but also of the world. Plants were selected and arranged in accordance with such concepts as 4 seasons (a symbol of the cyclical nature of human life) and 5 cardinal directions.

Be sure to watch this beautiful video about Monaco!

6. Vintage Car Museum

Museum collection of vintage cars Victor Grigas

While traveling around Monaco, it does not hurt to visit an exhibition of car collections belonging to the prince. New National Museum

In the museum, you can take a look at the cultural values that the Principality of Monaco inherited, as well as contemporary works of art. Exhibitions are located on the squares of two villas. Villa Paloma appeared thanks to the American Edward Dickerson, who bought land here in 1913. In subsequent years, the building changed owners several times. During the Second World War, the villa was seriously damaged, and was renovated in 1950 by the new owners - the Fissor spouses.

In the mid-90s of the last century, it became state property, and in 2008 a museum was opened here. The villa remains one of the most beautiful houses in Monaco, its stained glass windows alone are worth it! Paloma is open daily, from 10 am to 6 pm, except holidays. Some of the collections are housed in the halls of the Villa Sober. In addition, there is a luxurious garden, which received the honorary badge of "Eco-friendly green spaces." Roses, citrus trees and various exotic plants grow here.

The villa got its name in 1904, when it was bought by the artist Robert Sober. In 1969, it became a national treasure. After that, an exhibition of dolls and miniatures of Madeleine de Galea was located here for a long time. Today there are temporary exhibitions. A visit to the museum will bring great pleasure to the guests of Monaco. Here you can see many interesting exhibits, in addition, you will have a chance to walk around the luxurious gardens.

Japanese garden

An amazing garden that is hard to forget. It is located right in the center of urbanized Monaco, on the Mediterranean coast. Around the noisy city, and here - the territory of silence and tranquility. A garden was created at the direction of Prince Reine III in memory of Princess Grace Kelly, who tragically died shortly before. Grace dreamed of seeing a Japanese garden on the lands of the principality - an oasis where harmony reigns. Landscape architect Yasuo Beppu began work on the project in 1990.

Today, guests can see here what is typical of Japanese gardens - stones, water, green spaces. Everything is arranged in accordance with strict canons. At the same time, the Japanese never set themselves the task of remaking nature in their own way. They only emphasize its originality. In the Japanese garden, you will see mountains and hills, a lake and a waterfall, shores and islands. Japanese traditions are borrowed from China. They are based on 3 elements: line, point and surface. They are all represented in the garden.

A long path bypasses the lake and the waterfall. Coniferous and olive trees grow around. There are also beautiful bridges, and stone lanterns, and the Tea House. The islands symbolize animals that enjoy life: the slow turtle and the fast crane. The garden always has its own special microclimate. To support it, an artificial fog system has been created. Humid air is favorable for local plants, promotes their rapid growth and gives the leaves a brighter color.

Casino Monte Carlo

This is the oldest gambling establishment in Europe. You can play poker, roulette or give preference to slot machines. The casino opened in 1863 and helped save the Grimaldi princely house from bankruptcy. Subsequently, the premises of the gambling house were destroyed by fire. Only those areas where the vestibule is now located have survived. The casino was reopened in 1878, and in 1999 it was restored. The interiors here are very beautiful, but you need to remember that photography is prohibited.

You can come here only to people who are already 18 years old (children are accompanied by adults), men must wear jackets, it is impossible to come here in light resort clothes, for example, in shorts. Slot machines are admitted free of charge, and to get access to roulette and poker, you need to pay 10 euros. There are also vip zones where they play only for very large sums. You can spend a lot of time here - restaurants, a club and a dance floor are open in the building.

In addition, there is an opera house. Although photography is not allowed in the casino, you can shoot movies here. Therefore, the gambling establishment appears in a number of popular films. The game starts at 2 pm, in the morning you can just come for a tour. An interesting fact: citizens of Monaco are not allowed to enter the casino, they can only play via the Internet.

Monte Carlo Opera House

This theater is located in the same place as the casino. At the end of the 19th century, there was practically no cultural entertainment in Monaco. And by the decision of Prince Charles III, a single complex began to be built, which includes a gambling establishment and a concert hall. For all spectators, the entrance is common - from the hall, lined with red marble. And only for the monarch there is a separate entrance. The hall was opened in 1879 and named after the architect Charles Garnier. The first audience saw the opera Chevalier Gaston, in which Sarah Bernhardt shone. The hall can accommodate over 500 spectators.

It is luxuriously decorated, its facade makes you think of the Parisian Grand Opera. Initially, it was assumed that the hall would be intended not only for the opera, but it was precisely such performances that turned out to be the most in demand. Therefore, at the end of the 19th century, the stage was reconstructed specifically for the opera. Since then, this theater has hosted about 100 premieres. The greatest artists of their time sang here, and the hall was invariably full.

Church of Saint Devota

This place is mentioned already in the 11th century. At that time there was a simple chapel. Subsequently, it was reconstructed. Work began in the 16th century - the first extensions appeared, in the 17th one could already see a bay window and a portico here. And in the 19th, a 15 m bell tower was erected. The facade eventually acquired the features of the neo-Greek style. The gate was decorated with a pattern of stones in contrasting colors - white and black, monograms appeared on the porch.

The chapel was expanded and received the status of a church parish. According to legend, Saint Devota was tortured to death during the cruel times of the persecution of the first Christians. Her friends and followers wanted to bury the girl's body in Africa, but the boat was washed ashore in Monaco during a storm. Here Davota was buried by local fishermen. In the 11th century, a chapel was erected in honor of the saint.

In the church you can see paintings and sculptures made with amazing skill. Presumably, a student of Rodin worked on one of them. The relics of Davota are also stored here. Next to the church stands a statue of the saint, made of marble and bronze. On January 27, the feast of St. Davota is celebrated. At this time, flowers bloom in Monaco. Traditionally, people burn several boats.

Port Hercule

The port is a natural deep-water bay. The ships of the ancient Greeks and Romans moored here. However, strong east winds often prevented ships from entering the safe harbor and anchoring here. Therefore, at the beginning of the 20th century, berths were built here, and in the 70s, after research, a wave wall and a breakwater appeared. Now any ships can enter the port, even huge cruise liners. Equipped here and a special marina.

In total, up to 700 ships can anchor in the port. The depth near the berths does not exceed 7 m, and where the bay ends it reaches 40 m. In the port you can take a walk, look at beautiful ships and yachts. At the same time, there is a chance to meet movie stars and other celebrities. Many films were also filmed here, including scenes from the James Bond epic.

Fort Antoine

The fort was built in the 18th century and named after the prince who ordered its construction. Initially, it was a fortress with an additional natural "fortification": there was a rock nearby. There was everything necessary to successfully withstand the siege: a watchtower, ramparts that protected from cannonballs, even thickets of thorny plants that would help defend against enemies. Only under Prince Rainier III the fort was rebuilt, and now it serves exclusively peaceful purposes. Ancient cannons salute, bringing joy to tourists. And in the fort itself there is an open-air theater.

In total, 350 spectators can be accommodated here. Various musical shows and performances are shown here. It is pleasant not only to watch what is happening on the stage, but also to admire the opening seascape. In the evening, the lights turn on, creating a special romantic atmosphere. I am glad that the people of Monaco treat their cultural heritage so carefully. During World War II, the fort was destroyed, but then it was restored. And now you can fully appreciate its beauty.

Oceanographic Museum

A very interesting museum, a real national pride. It was founded by Prince Albert the First at the beginning of the 20th century. The prince was engaged in the study of the oceans, participated in many scientific expeditions. Today, the museum's collections include more than 6 thousand exhibits. The purpose of this temple of science is to help people get to know and love the oceans. Here you can see aquariums in which the inhabitants of tropical waters and the Mediterranean Sea live.

There are sharks and piranhas, corals and seahorses, octopuses, moray eels, jellyfish - you can list for a long time. Viewers will see both completely harmless and deadly fish. There is a special "contact pool", the inhabitants of which can be fed. Directly in the museum itself, you can visit the halls of Keith and Albert the First, as well as the Oceanomania cabinet of curiosities.

The most interesting exhibits are exhibited here - from marine fossils to the rarest books telling about the oceans. Since the prince dreamed that someday science and art would merge, the museum periodically hosts exhibitions of paintings by famous artists. The museum is open seven days a week. There is a restaurant on the roof, you can sit here, admiring the Mediterranean Sea.

Gardens of Saint Martin

Beautiful gardens where you can not only look at rare plants, but also admire the city from a bird's eye view. The Gardens of Saint-Martin are adjacent to the Oceanographic Museum. They opened in 1830 and immediately became very popular. Both guests of the principality and local residents come here. Thanks to the numerous green spaces, it is cool here even in the heat. The plants here are the most amazing. For example, cacti that are over 100 years old. Also here you can see sculptures, including a monument to Albert the First. Also from these gardens you can go to the Observatory Cave, admire the stalactites and stalagmites.

Cathedral of Saint Nicholas

The Cathedral is a real gem of Monaco, it is the main temple for the Catholics of the Principality. Once upon a time there was an ancient church on this place, it was destroyed in the 13th century. And at the end of the 19th, the Cathedral of St. Nicholas was erected here. An interesting fact is that it was built from a special limestone, which becomes white when exposed to moisture. Therefore, if you get here in the rain, you will see that the walls near the cathedral are snow-white.

The locals believe that God's grace, like rain, washes away sins from the soul, and it is cleansed. Therefore, on rainy days, there are especially many worshipers in the cathedral. The four bells of the cathedral have their own names - Immaculate Virgin Mary, Nicole, Devota and Benedict. The temple was built in the Neo-Romanesque style, that is, here you can see the features of Gothic, Art Nouveau, and Renaissance.

Scenes from the Bible are depicted on stone slabs. It is in this cathedral that the monarch and his family come to pray - there are special lodges here. If you visit the temple, you can admire marvelous mosaics, stained-glass windows, ancient altars and paintings by great artists. Within the walls of the cathedral are buried members of the Grimaldi dynasty, Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco. There is also a beautiful organ here.

Port of Fontvieille

An area of Monaco where you can spend the whole day. There is a wonderful mild climate and a lot of vegetation. You will see palm trees, pines, oaks, a huge number of fruit trees, including citrus. And, of course, there are a lot of birds here. There are also many attractions in the area. It is worth visiting the Museum of Vintage Cars of Prince Rainier the Third - about a hundred exhibits are presented here.

The Maritime Museum contains miniature models of the most famous ships. They are executed masterfully, and it is very interesting to examine the collection. There is also a huge stadium that can accommodate up to 16 thousand spectators. International competitions are held here. Tourists will also like a helicopter ride. Heliport at your service! The flight will take about 10 minutes and you will be able to look at the city from above. Another local attraction is the landscape park, where the Grace Kelly rose garden is located.

Prince's Palace

The Grimaldi family has been living here for seven centuries. The palace stands on top of a cliff. It used to look like a fortress, but now it looks really luxurious. During the French Revolution, the palace was plundered, the treasures were lost, and a hospital was located here. As a result of painstaking work, the appearance was restored. When the monarch is in the palace, the prince's flag is raised over the residence. In summer, tourists have the opportunity to visit inside, inspect the ceremonial halls.

Here you can see frescoes depicting mythical characters, the chapel of John the Baptist, dating back to the 17th century. There is also a chance to get to a music concert - such events have been held here regularly since the middle of the 20th century. There are very interesting collections in the palace. For example, personal belongings and clothes of Napoleon are presented here. If you arrive at the palace by noon, you will see the changing of the guard going on.

zoological garden

The zoo was founded in 1954 by Prince Rainier. Today it contains about 250 inhabitants. Among them are birds, reptiles, primates, even hippos. You can also see farm animals here. Interestingly, all the pets were donated to the zoo. Also here sometimes there are abandoned animals, or those that were confiscated by customs.

Sometimes it gets too crowded here, and sometimes such rare specimens get into the royal menagerie that they are not able to provide the necessary care for them here. Then the pets are given to other zoos in the country. Thus, you have the opportunity to get into the world of wildlife in the very center of an urbanized state. People with disabilities can also visit the zoo, for which all amenities have been created.

Museum of stamps and coins

In this museum, you can look at historical stamps and coins of the Principality, as well as buy souvenirs. Major exhibitions are regularly held here, attended by philatelists from all over the world. The Museum of Stamps and Coins was founded in 1995, and received its first visitors in 1996. It is located in the Fontvieille area. Monaco's first own stamps appeared in 1885.

The very first coins - much earlier - in 1640. A few years later, King Louis the Fourteenth of France allowed the free circulation of the coins of the principality on the territory of his country. Today, the "Euro Monaco" is in use. In the store you can buy both stamps and coins, as well as various books on philately and numismatics. The museum is open daily, entrance costs 3 euros.

Vintage Car Museum

The history of this museum is interesting. Prince Rainier the Third collected so many vintage cars on his estate that there was no longer enough space for them. Then in 1993 he decided to found a new museum. His son Albert sold the second part of his cars, and with the proceeds he bought even rarer rarities. Today, the museum houses unique classic and sports models. For example, visitors will see a Lexus that was carrying newlyweds - Albert II and his wife Charlene.

And what about a collection of Rolls-Royce cars! There are also cars donated to the museum by the inhabitants of Monaco. This is evidenced by special plates. You can even see here the carriage of Charles the Third, which dates back to the 19th century. It was Charles who built the famous casino on the lands of the principality. The oldest car is over 100 years old. Special straps hold his wings.

Princess Grace Rosary

The rose garden was created by Prince Rainier the Third in 1984 - in memory of Princess Grace. Today there are about 5 thousand bushes - 150 species of roses. And, of course, there are always a lot of butterflies here - they are attracted by the aroma. Grace met the Prince of Monaco in 1955, she posed with him in the garden near the Grimaldi Palace - the pictures were intended for the Paris-Match magazine. For the wedding, Grace received a gift - a nominal rose: a delicate double flower, painted in pink tones. Now the statue of Princess Grace is installed in the rose garden, and the garden itself is made in the form of a flower with 9 petals. In addition to roses, olives and yews grow here, which serve as a backdrop for beautiful flowers.

Stade Louis II

It was opened in 1985 on the site of the old stadium of the same name. Named after the Prince of Monaco, who was at the helm of the state when the sports facility was being built. There is a magnificent football field here, it is no coincidence that the UEFA Super Cup has been held here many times. Also a few years ago, you could watch the Olympic Rugby Qualifier here.

exotic garden

The exotic garden resembles the canvases of the surrealists. Its area reaches 15 thousand m2. The pride of the garden is cacti and other succulents. Since many species of these plants are collected here, you can come here at any time of the year: some cacti will definitely bloom. There are also many unusual trees. The garden received its first guests in 1933, so the age of many specimens is very respectable. Previously, there was a small astronomical observatory here. Today it is not here, but visitors have the opportunity to explore the unusual caves that adorn the picturesque deposits. Once the caves were used by ancient people, there are remains of animals killed during the hunt.

Princess Antoinette Park

This park is definitely worth a visit if you come to Monaco with children. Beautiful olive trees grow here, many flowers, even on hot days it is easy to breathe here. Walking along the alleys, you will see sports grounds and sandboxes, swings and a golf course. For children there is a mini-farm where you can try yourself as a gardener. The children will be told about the fruits and vegetables that are grown on the territory of Monaco, about how the famous oil is made from olives. If you want to celebrate some family holiday, for example, a birthday, there is a cafe in the park, the hall is designed for almost 20 people.

Although Monaco is a small principality, it is impossible to see all its sights in 1 day. But then you will have time to get acquainted with the most significant of them.
