Heroes of the Russian Federation
2000, posthumously

Born on August 27, 1972. In 1989 he graduated from secondary school №4 in the city of Glazov. As a schoolboy, he began to engage in martial arts in the Glazov sports club "Patriot". Participated in hand-to-hand combat competitions. Classmates remember him as a kind and cheerful person who always and in every way strived to be the first. "He was very reliable," says a neighbor on his desk about him.
In the early nineties, his childhood dream came true, Mikhail entered the Omsk Higher Combined Arms Command School, after which, like Yuri Kuryagin, he was sent to serve in the Marine Corps. In November 1999, together with his unit, he arrived in the Chechen Republic, where he headed an intelligence group. Many times his detachment made daring reconnaissance raids, going deep into the rear of the enemy. Captain Churkin's group was one of the most efficient units of the famous Chief intelligence agency(GRU) of the Russian General Staff. Very little is always known about the actions of these units, they are so deeply classified. This is especially true of the so-called naval special forces - the elite of the elite Russian Army... Our popular TV series "Spetsnaz" tried to lift some veil.
On January 2, 2000, Captain Mikhail Konstantinovich Churkin, while carrying out a combat mission to eliminate bandit formations on the territory of the Chechen Republic, died a heroic death. Buried in the city of Glazov.

Obelisk
... In the second half of February, the paratroopers of one of the units of the Ural Military District were tasked with conducting reconnaissance of the area in the Argun Gorge area, “straddling” the dominant heights along the route and ensuring the safety of motorized rifle subunits passing through the reconnaissance area. On the morning of February 22, the helicopters delivered a detachment of Major Sergei Skukin to the landing site in six rounds. The paratroopers knew that the height was not tracked, for a long time it was under the control of the militants. Therefore, they counted only on the rockiness and inaccessibility of the site from below.

The property was quickly unloaded - ammunition, food, fuel, this should have been enough for a week. They acted according to a well-established scheme - leaving the outposts, the reconnaissance groups headed for the designated points. Captain Mikhail Churkin's group passed no more than two hundred meters ...

According to the scouts, the militants entered in advance from where normal people do not go - from the side of the rocky area. They were fixed. We let the reconnaissance patrol at a distance of a shot from the "grenade launcher". But they miscalculated in one thing - they were sure that there were not many scouts. Therefore, the patrol took over the full power of the ambush fire.

Captain Churkin had only seconds left to name those who were to take up the defense with him. But in reality, only three were able to fight. Five from the reconnaissance patrol were wounded in the first minute. The gangster's bullet also hit the officer.

Everybody go away! Take out the wounded! I cover ... - this, apparently, was his last team. The captain deliberately sacrificed himself in the hope of ensuring the escape of his comrades from under fire.

Commander, I will stay! - Changing the store on the move, the sniper-scout of the group, junior sergeant Dmitry Shektayev, shouted and immediately fell into deep snow a few meters from the wounded officer, took aim at the place from which the nearest bandit machine gun was firing, and pulled the trigger several times.

Since childhood, Dima dreamed of becoming a paratrooper. He barely waited for the day when, by his age, they were able to be admitted to the city military-patriotic club "Marine Paratrooper", - recalls the mother of Dmitry Shektayev. - And if you only saw how he rejoiced when the draft board recognized him as fit for service in the airborne troops! He was so glad of this that, telling us the news, he simply could not sit still ... I know my son well: he would never leave the wounded commander ...

They had to hold out a little longer. The evacuation of the wounded had already been completed. They bought time. Those few minutes, often meaningless in civilian life and so invaluable in combat conditions, allowed the victims to be rescued, the group emerged from an ambush, dispersed and took the initiative into their own hands.

The militants were driven from a height. But those who covered the retreat of the Ural paratroopers could not be saved. Captain Churkin died from several bullet wounds. Junior Sergeant Shektayev - from a direct hit from a grenade.

Major Viktor Molchanov was the first to receive an alarming message about the ambushed scouts.

I just returned from the transfer of Skukin's detachment to the gorge: I flew with them, - the officer recalls. - I went to the Central Bank of Ukraine - and suddenly a message. Their radio operator reported that there were wounded in the detachment, there were two killed.

Within a few minutes, the Mi-8 was loaded with medicines and stretchers. A group of a special medical detachment arrived promptly. The helicopter pilots were only waiting for the signal to take off. They understood that for scouts they are the last thread connecting them with life.

They were in time. They squeezed out of their rotary-wing machines everything they were capable of. At the mountain site, the loading of the wounded was under fire from the militants: an immovable board “on a jump” was an excellent target. But, apparently, lucky. Returning to base, the Mi-8 counted more than a dozen bullet holes.

The wounded, with the exception of one, were still there, at the height of the one who refused to evacuate, were transferred to the medical battalion. The bodies of Captain Churkin and Junior Sergeant Shektayev - near Rostov.

A few days later, Ural craftsmen carved and riveted a small obelisk from pieces of sheet iron. Paying military honors, they installed it on the site of the last battle of their comrades. “It’s a pity, they didn’t have time to paint the obelisk,” complains Major Molchanov, “and the plaque, in whose memory it was installed, was not fixed. There was no time. The next tasks, new areas of reconnaissance ... We were not able to return to that height any more. "

This is how an unnamed, unpainted obelisk stands today in the Argun Gorge in honor of those who laid down their lives “for their friend” on high. Without hesitation. Don't hesitate. Only because it was necessary.

Today, four paratroopers of the Ural Military District have already been awarded the title of Hero of Russia. Three of them are posthumous. And these days the Ural paratroopers are solving combat missions in the North Caucasus.

I want only one thing: for all the guys to return home safe and sound, ”Yuri Veniaminovich, the father of Dmitry Shektayev, said, accepting the Star of Hero of his son from the hands of the commander of the district troops, Colonel-General Alexander Baranov.

Tears glisten in the eyes of Yulia Churkina. Little Grisha clings to his mother, clutching a "golden star" in his hand. All that remained to him in memory of his father ...

An excerpt characterizing Churkin, Mikhail Konstantinovich

After talking about Princess Marya and her deceased father, whom Malvintseva apparently did not love, and asking that Nikolai knew about Prince Andrei, who, apparently, did not use her favors, the important old woman let him go, repeating the invitation to be with her.
Nikolai promised and blushed again when he bowed to Malvintseva. At the mention of Princess Marya, Rostov experienced a feeling of shyness, even fear, incomprehensible to him.
Departing from Malvintseva, Rostov wanted to return to dancing, but the little governor put her plump hand on Nikolai's sleeve and, saying that she needed to talk to him, took him into the sofa, from which those who were in her left immediately, so as not to interfere with the governor's wife.
“You know, mon cher,” said the governor's wife with a serious expression of a kind little face, “this is definitely a party for you; do you want me to pick you up?
- Who, ma tante? Nikolai asked.
- I'll marry the princess. Katerina Petrovna says that Lily, but in my opinion not, is a princess. Want? I'm sure your maman will be grateful. Really, what a lovely girl! And she's not that bad at all.
“Not at all,” Nikolai said, as if offended. “I, ma tante, as a soldier should, do not ask for anything and don’t refuse anything,” Rostov said before he had time to think about what he was saying.
“So remember: this is not a joke.
- What a joke!
- Yes, yes, - as if speaking to herself, said the governor's wife. “And here's another thing, mon cher, entre autres. Vous etes trop assidu aupres de l "autre, la blonde. [My friend. You take too much care of that blond one.] The husband is too pathetic, really ...
“Oh no, we are friends,” Nikolai said in simplicity of his soul: it never entered his head that such a fun passing of time for him might not be fun for someone.
“What nonsense I said, however, to the governor! - Nicholas suddenly recalled at supper. “She will definitely start wooing, but Sonya? ..” And, saying goodbye to the governor, when she, smiling, once again said to him: “Well, then, remember,” he took her aside:
“But here's what, to tell you the truth, ma tante ...
- What, what, my friend; let's go sit here.
Nicholas suddenly felt the desire and the need to tell all his soulful thoughts (such that he would not have told his mother, sister, friend) to this almost alien woman. Nikolai later, when he recalled this outburst of unexplained, inexplicable frankness, which, however, had very important consequences for him, it seemed (as it always seems to people) that he had found a stupid verse; and yet this impulse of frankness, together with other minor events, had enormous consequences for him and for the whole family.
“That's what, ma tante. Maman wants to marry me for a long time to a rich one, but this idea is disgusting to me, to marry for money.
“Oh, yes, I understand,” said the governor.
- But Princess Bolkonskaya, that's another matter; firstly, I'll tell you the truth, I really like her, she is to my heart, and then, after I met her in such a position, it was so strange, it often occurred to me that this was fate. Especially think: maman has been thinking about this for a long time, but before I had the chance to meet her, somehow it all happened: we didn’t meet. And during the time when Natasha was the bride of her brother, because then I would not have been able to think of marrying her. I must have met her exactly when Natasha's wedding was upset, and then that's it ... Yes, that's what. I have not said this to anyone and will not tell anyone. And only you.

At least once everyone who loves to photograph has done light graffiti - almost everyone has photographs with stretched light lines from the headlights of cars racing in the night, caught at long exposure, as well as hearts and letters taken in light painting lessons somewhere in the classroom in photo school.

Yandex gives his name first on request "light graffiti", and probably not by chance - Mikhail Churkin's photos surprise, fascinate, cause envy and admiration, and make one wonder: HOW?

But in general, there are more questions, and 10 of them I asked the St. Petersburg photographer Mikhail Churkin on the eve of his

1. If you had to give the most complete information about yourself in three facts, what would you tell?

A patient enthusiastic Photographer.

2.Lightgraffiti - is it easy or difficult? Fast or long?

It's beautiful and interesting. Both. When you start shooting in light graffiti it seems difficult, when you start trying and you succeed - it's simple. From simple pictures to more complex ones, and then from quick sketches (hearts, wings, halos, etc.) to larger-scale and staged ones, then it will take a long time. Lightgraffiti is an interesting process of preparing, setting up, shooting material. And if we also take into account that drawing with light lies in three planes - photography, video and drawing, then this art form takes on even greater depth.

3. Is light graffiti for you art or work? Is it something for self-expression or for money?

Most of all, creativity, I find in it a lot of new things for myself and for photography in general. Creativity brings both pleasure and money, if I do not refuse to offer commercial projects. The last commercial work is a calendar for a Moscow company. When I uploaded the work to the Internet, questions were pouring in where you can buy it .... :)

4. Recently, everyone summed up the results of 2009 and shared their plans for 2010. In a nutshell - what do you leave in the past, what do you expect in the future?

I leave the past in 2009 and everything that I did not have time to do. In 2010, I take only new and interesting things - this year I have sponsors who will provide me with all kinds of lighting equipment. Now I am thinking how to use such opportunities optimally, there are many plans for shooting lightgarffiti, both outdoor and indoor.

5. You have participated and are participating in many interesting projects and exhibitions, you shoot a lot. Is there one project-exhibition-series that you are most proud of?

Proud of nothing, in fact. Perhaps, I will say differently, I really liked the last festival, where I gave master classes for 3 days, seminars and workshops - this is New culture fest- I specifically asked for time off from work for one day in order to be in time for the start of the festival. For three days I worked in my own box, told Muscovites about drawing with light, taught them, explained, showed, commented, consulted - there was a lot of work. In parallel with the organizers, we made the second box - an exhibition of international masters of light was organized in it - Julien Breton aka Kaalam - Julien works in the style of luminous ligature (calligraphy), Patrick Rochon 0 a series of light portraits was presented, and Jadikan Light Project Guillaume presented 5 of the latest works.

I also liked my last commercial work - this calendar for 2010 is called " Discoveries that changed the world ".

6. Is there any famous photographer, designer, musician with whom you would like to work together, and on what?

In general, I am an impressionable person, so I like a lot and would like to do joint work with many artists, musicians, artists.

Of those that have already been implemented, this is a series of photographs with Serezha Demidov, with Sasha Vaks, now the next in line is a wonderful DJ from Moscow Gleb Subwave. The process has started! :)

7. Do you have a favorite filming location?

No, I quickly take root everywhere.

8. What is the most useful and most useless thing on your set?

The most useful is all volitional qualities, the most useless is alcohol ... Without the will to succeed, without the desire, without the attitude and strength, it is unlikely that you will get even the slightest bit of a beautiful photo. Without this, nowhere. Everyone who draws with light uses approximately the same tools, and the results vary enormously .... How can this phenomenon be explained? I attribute this to desire and desire.

9.What do you tell yourself when everything works out?

Wonderful.

And when is nothing?

Not yet evening.

10. Tomorrow, on Friday, you will have a master class at the St. Petersburg Academy of Photography. What do you expect from him yourself - who would you like to see, what are you planning to tell, what are you going to teach?

I hope that the material that I have prepared will impress photographers - in the master class I included everything from a quick start for beginners to tips and tricks in light graffiti, i.e. even high-level photographers will be able to find something new for themselves (at least I hope so) :)
