An excerpt characterizing Chepik, Nikolai Petrovich

“She’s in love with Boris even now!” What is it? - said the countess, smiling softly, looking at Boris's mother, and, apparently answering the thought that always occupied her, continued. - Well, you see, I kept her strictly, I forbid her ... God knows what they would do on the sly (the Countess understood: they would kiss), and now I know her every word. She herself will come running in the evening and tell me everything. Maybe I spoil her; but, really, it seems to be better. I kept the older one strictly.
“Yes, I was brought up quite differently,” said the eldest, beautiful Countess Vera, smiling.
But the smile did not adorn Vera's face, as is usually the case; on the contrary, her face became unnatural and therefore unpleasant.
The eldest, Vera, was good, was not stupid, she studied well, was well educated, her voice was pleasant, what she said was fair and appropriate; but, strange to say, everyone, both the guest and the countess, looked back at her, as if they were surprised why she had said this, and felt awkward.
“They are always wise with older children, they want to do something extraordinary,” said the guest.
- What a sin to conceal, ma chere! The Countess was wise with Vera, ”said the Count. - Well, what of it! all the same she came out glorious, '' he added, winking approvingly at Vera.
The guests got up and left, promising to come for dinner.
- What a manner! We were already sitting, sitting! - said the countess, seeing off the guests.

When Natasha left the living room and ran, she only ran to the flower room. In this room she stopped, listening to the conversation in the drawing-room and waiting for Boris to come out. She was already beginning to get impatient and, stamping her foot, was about to cry because he was not walking now, when he heard the not quiet, not fast, decent steps of a young man.
Natasha quickly rushed between the flowerpots and hid.
Boris stopped in the middle of the room, looked around, brushed the specks from the sleeve of his uniform with his hand, and walked over to the mirror, examining his handsome face. Natasha, quieted down, peered out of her ambush, expecting what he would do. He stood for some time in front of the mirror, smiled and went to the exit door. Natasha wanted to call out to him, but then changed her mind. Let him look, she told herself. Boris had just left when a flushed Sonya came out of the other door, whispering evilly through her tears. Natasha refrained from her first movement to run out to her and remained in her ambush, as if under an invisible hat, looking out for what was happening in the world. She experienced a special new pleasure. Sonya whispered something and looked back at the drawing-room door. Nikolai came out the door.
- Sonya! What's the matter? Is it possible? - said Nikolay, running up to her.
- Nothing, nothing, leave me! - Sonya burst into tears.
- No, I know what.
- Well, you know, and fine, and go to her.
- Soooh! One word! Is it possible to torture me and yourself like that because of fantasy? - Nikolay said, taking her hand.
Sonya did not pull her hands away from him and stopped crying.
Natasha, without moving or breathing, looked out of her ambush with shining heads. "What will happen now"? she thought.
- Sonya! I don't need the whole world! You are everything for me, - said Nikolai. - I'll prove it to you.
“I don’t like it when you say that.”
- Well, I won't, well, forgive me, Sonya! He pulled her to him and kissed her.
"Oh, how good!" thought Natasha, and when Sonya and Nikolai left the room, she followed them and called Boris to her.
“Boris, come here,” she said with a significant and sly look. - I need to tell you one thing. Here, here, ”she said, and led him to the flower room to the place between the tubs where she was hidden. Boris, smiling, followed her.
- What is this one thing? - he asked.
She was embarrassed, looked around her and, seeing her doll thrown on the barrel, took it in her hands.
“Kiss the doll,” she said.
Boris looked at her lively face with an attentive, affectionate look and did not answer.
- You do not want? Well, come here, ”she said, and went deeper into the flowers and threw the doll. - Closer, closer! She whispered. She caught the officer's cuffs with her hands, and her reddened face showed solemnity and fear.
- Do you want to kiss me? She whispered, barely audible, looking at him from under her brows, smiling and almost crying with excitement.
Boris blushed.
- How funny you are! - he said, bending over to her, blushing even more, but doing nothing and waiting.

The first hero - "Afghan": Nikolai Chepik

Nikolai Petrovich Chepik was born on April 16, 1960 in the village of Bluzha, Pukhovichi district, Minsk region (now the Republic of Belarus). After graduation, he worked as a fitter at the Minsk track station of the Belarusian Railways. In May 1978 he was drafted into the ranks of the Soviet Army. As his former commander, reserve major Pavel Agafonov, recalls, “Nikolai Chepik came to my platoon from training in the late autumn of 1978 and was appointed to the position of squad commander. I remember him as a simple country guy with a strong Belarusian accent, a very diligent and rather trained sergeant. Nikolai took part in all the activities of the company, and no murmur was ever heard from him. Therefore, when in the spring of 1979 the platoon commander resigned, Chepik took his place.

On December 10, 1979, the 317th Guards Parachute Regiment of the 103rd Airborne Division, in which Chepik served, was alerted. After 16 days, the paratroopers landed on Afghan soil, on which heavy battles were already going on ...

On February 29, 1980, a group of three people under the command of the guard senior sergeant Nikolai Chepik was returning from a successfully completed mission - they were instructed to blow up the cave in which the spooks settled. Suddenly, the paratroopers stumbled upon a large detachment of mujahideen. An unequal battle ensued. The enemy tried to take the guys into the ring, but Nikolai's group desperately resisted. Chepik was wounded twice in the legs. When his comrades, privates Kerim Kerimov and Alexander Rassokhin, died one after another, and Nikolai ran out of ammunition, he tied his remaining directional mine to a tree and blew himself up along with the militants. Together with the Soviet soldier-internationalist, 32 bandits were killed ... Nikolai Chepik was not yet twenty years old.

On April 28, 1980, NP Chepik was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. He became the first to be awarded this title for courage shown on Afghan soil. On August 12, 1980, the hero's name was forever entered into the lists of the military unit.

The spooks attacked the unit just before dawn. Vile, insidious and sudden. The snow-covered stone ridge was the last front line of Senior Sergeant Nikolai Chepik.

He saw how a large group of dushmans approached them, the living ring shrinking more and more tightly. And now one, and then the second bullet pierced his legs. Bullets whistled over the heads of his friends - soldiers, compatriots, and behind the soldiers, further, there were residents of a tiny village, forgotten by the Muslim god, in which the Dukans were smoldering. And Nikolai made a decision: to cover his comrades with his own life, everyone who was behind him.

A deafening explosion swept over the ground. Thirty spooks fell down dead, the rest fled.

Working behind enemy lines, eliminating bandit formations, protecting the local population are operations that require not a massive attack with large forces, but the delivery of accurate and effective strikes at key points in enemy territory.

On that day, February 29, 1980, a group of four people under the command of deputy platoon commander Nikolai Chepik was returning from a successfully completed mission - they were instructed to blow up the cave in which the spooks settled. We need peace, not war

Nikolai Chepik served in the paratrooper sappers unit. On February 29, 1980, Nikolai's unit, returning to the place of deployment after clearing the roads, was ambushed. Some of the soldiers died. Sergeant Chepik took command. He was wounded in the thigh, ordered everyone to withdraw, and he himself remained to cover his comrades. I could not move independently. After some time, I used up all the ammunition. The spooks came close, surrounded the soldier from all sides. Surely they were counting on easy prey, but they did not have time to come to their senses, as the paratrooper activated a directional mine ...

They were just starting to live

Home wrote that the paratrooper loses the battle when he is already dead. The spooks who surrounded our three soldiers on the last day of February 1980 did not know this. Both comrades died under their heavy fire, only Chepik remained, clutching a grenade in his hand. Surrender? .. Not so he was brought up ... An explosion thundered ... He died, but took the lives of several dozen more dushmans with him.

LIFE FIELD

We could meet him in Kabul - we were there at the same time. I didn't have to. And here is the bust. What was he like - senior sergeant Nikolai Chepik? How did you live? What is left of a life of only twenty years? Many, if not all, material traces disappear without a trace. The memory of exploits is never.

Today we know who Chepik became in his twenty years. And who could have become at forty or fifty? One can only guess about this. He was not expected to have a bright future. He was an honest, hardworking, decent guy. Normal! But it is here, in a stable, good-quality normality, that energy, nobility and selflessness arise, ripen, which, under a certain set of circumstances, lead to heroism.

The moment comes, and an ordinary representative of his generation - in this case, Nikolai Chepik, and there could be someone else - shows what he is capable of. In doing duty, he accomplishes a feat.

Chepik saved the lives of those whom he protected at the cost of his own life. This is the pinnacle of the possible.

The unit in which Nikolai served as part of a limited contingent of Soviet troops in Afghanistan was located in one of the country's eastern provinces. Here, attacks by dushmans on civilians, arson of schools, mosques, and brutal murders have become more frequent. Gangs of mercenaries, abandoned from abroad, in their cruelty, probably surpassed even the atrocities of the German fascists.

February nights in the Afghan mountains are not just dark. They are slate black. The snow is black, the sky is black, the wind is black - time for black deeds.

And Nikolai made a decision: to cover his comrades with his own life, everyone who was behind him.

A deafening explosion swept over the ground. Thirty spooks fell down dead, the rest fled.

The last thing he could still see were the peaks of the Hindu Kush, and above them a huge - to the very Motherland - a brightening sky.
